Residential Lock Rekeying in Columbus, Ohio
When the concern is who holds a key rather than a broken lock, rekeying can reset access while retaining suitable existing hardware. We assess each cylinder and explain the limits before recommending work.

Changing access without changing every lock
Moving into a home, losing a house key, or changing household access can leave uncertainty about old copies. Rekeying adjusts the internal combination of a suitable cylinder to operate with a new key. The previous key then no longer operates that rekeyed cylinder, while the visible handles or deadbolt can often remain.
The scope matters: a key may still open another lock that was not included. Count every cylinder you want addressed, including separate knobs and deadbolts on the same door. Identify garages, side entrances, or other keyed areas rather than assuming the front door is the whole job.
Check condition and key compatibility
Rekeying is not a remedy for a failing latch, loose hardware, or a door that does not align with its strike. Those issues should be assessed alongside the access change. A damaged or unsuitable cylinder may require repair or replacement instead.
If the aim is a single key for several doors, the locks must use compatible cylinders and keyways. Different brands or cylinder families cannot always be combined. Tell us which keys currently operate which doors so we can discuss a practical arrangement rather than promising that every lock can match.
A useful plan before the Columbus visit
Prepare a door list and gather current keys. Note any cylinders that cannot be opened, any recently replaced hardware, and the number of new copies you need for authorized users. If you rent, confirm the owner's or manager's rules before changing the key arrangement.
Call our E Main St branch with the address and approximate cylinder count to discuss availability and an estimate. After work, verify the intended new keys on the included locks and store spares securely. Rekeying mechanical locks does not automatically change keypad codes or electronic credentials; discuss those separately.
What to prepare
- A list of every cylinder to include, not just every door
- Current keys and notes on which doors they operate
- Details of any sticking, broken, or restricted locks
- Property approval and the number of authorized key copies needed
Frequently asked questions
Will my old house key stop working everywhere?
It will no longer operate the cylinders successfully rekeyed to a different key. It can still operate any compatible lock that was not changed, so define the full scope before work.
Can rekeying keep my existing handles and deadbolts?
Often, when the cylinders are serviceable and suitable for rekeying. Damaged or incompatible hardware may need a different solution after assessment.
Does rekeying reset a smart-lock code?
Not automatically. A mechanical cylinder and electronic access settings are separate. Tell the branch about keypad or smart features and ask what changes are included.
